Welcome to Shop with a Kappa Website.

Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. is an international Greek-letter fraternity founded in 1911. The fraternity has more than 150,000 members with 721 undergraduate and alumni chapters in every state of the United States as well as international chapters. The Las Vegas Alumni and Theta Sigma Chapters are actively involved in the Las Vegas community through its community service, youth mentoring, and various civic activities.

Shop with a Kappa is a Guide Right Program initiative hosted by the Las Vegas Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi along with the Diamond Foundation Inc. (Kappa Alpha Psi non-profit entity). Shop with a Kappa is an annual event that occurs every December since 2012. Members of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc accompany disadvantage children in the community as they each enjoy spending $100.00 for Christmas gifts of their choosing from the local Wal-Mart store. The children selected to participate are chosen from Boy’s Town, Rainbow Dreams Academy, Andre Agassi Prep. Academy, Southern Nevada Regional Housing Authority, Big Brother’s and Big Sister’s, and Booker and Goynes Elementary school.

The first year (2012) as a committee we were able to raised $3,700 for the youth in Las Vegas. The 3rd Annual Shop with a KAPPA was held on December 20, 2014 at Wal-Mart. The Chapter was able to provide 45 disadvantaged kids with $100 Wal-Mart gift cards to shop for Christmas presents. The Las Vegas Alumni Chapter has now expanded the Shop with a KAPPA initiative to over ten major metropolitan cities throughout the Western Province of Kappa Alpha Psi. The cities participating last year included:

Anchorage, Alaska
Salt Lake City/Ogden, Utah
Irvine-Anaheim, California
San Jose, California
Las Vegas, Nevada
Seattle, Washington
Phoenix, Arizona
Tacoma, Washington

The Western Province raised more than $18,300 last year bringing our annual total to $33,800 since the program started. This year the following cities have also pledged to participate: San Diego, Los Angeles, Long Beach, Temecula. It is our goal to make this an annual event under the fraternity’s Guide Right program within the Western Province, and eventually moving on to become a national initiative for the fraternity by 2018.

This concept was started by Rod O’Neal through his experiences in his many years in law enforcement while observing the shop with a cop program. Although he felt there was a definite need for this type of community service he didn’t believe it was reaching the youth in our communities. This is a great tool to reach directly into your communities identified by the
individual chapters and touch those in need.
